The Magician: Art as Sophistry

So I have a habit of buying Criterion Blu-rays; usually without ever having seen the movie before. I feel this is a good gamble most of the time, but there have been some that I would probably never watch again. "The Magician" was definitely a welcome surprise.

You just never know what you are going to get with Bergman. This film was dark, funny, and creepy all at once. Not slow and plodding like some Bergman films, yet still philosophically compelling. Oh, and be sure to look up the essay by Oliver Assayas which appears in the October 1990 issue of Cashiers du cinema.
