Elizabeth Olsen’ brave first performance alone makes this movie an important film to see. She effortlessly navigates the complex emotional/psychological milieu in which her character is placed. Her participation in a “cult” community leaves her deeply scarred, paranoid, confused and unstable. The movie plays much like a traditional thriller, however doesn’t quite have the twists and turns you expect from that genre. The cinematography of upstate New York is beautifully shot, and edited into an intriguing film. Not everyone will like the understated performances, or maybe frustrated at the lack of progress Martha makes in the film; I say to them: such is life. (4 out of 5).
