Incendies

Currently on the shortlist for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film, this film is definitely one of the top movies to play at Sundance. I started out skeptical of the large red chapter headings that seem so pervasive in French cinema (French Canadian in this case). Films like “Un Prophete”, and “Enter the Void” (both of which I loved), also use this strategic story-telling device, but the film has to be epic to pull it off. (It was). You don’t understand how masterful this movie really is until you start to see the fragments come together and you ultimately realize the depth of the tragedy. This is definitely a classic film that will standup as one of the great films of the new decade. (5 out of 5).
